I began studying Japanese calligraphy (shodo) at the age of six and was fortunate to achieve the rank of 5th-degree black belt. Through shodo I developed the fundamentals of ink, line thickness and balance. I also learned the deeper meaning of Japanese kanji characters that broadened my perspective, ways of thinking & creativity — all of which greatly influenced my abstract art. “Harmony” is a new concept that employs shodo ink (sumi) on canvas that fuses painting and calligraphy to express the character "和" (Wa), which means peace & harmony in Japanese.
